Psychological foundation of learning and development
This an introductory course, Psychological Foundations of Learning and Development, (PGDT
412) is a one semester, 3 credit units/hours course which is designed and made available to
Distance Program trainees undertaking their first-degree program in education.
The overall aim of this course is to acquaint and equip you with the knowledge and skills of
learning and development which you will need to apply as a teacher. In this course, first, the
fundamental concepts, principles, stages and theories of human development are considered.
In general, the course greatly focuses on developmental and educational aspects of
psychological domains. Substantial emphasis is also given to the practical implications of the
various theories of human development to the teaching and learning process and behavioral
modifications.
The course will also present about the basic concepts, principles and major factors affecting
learning. Then after, major theories of learning and their implications for classroom practices
are the focus of this course. Emphasis is also given on motivation, memory and forgetting,
guidance and counseling and their implications to classroom learning.
