Course Course Description

Developing awareness about the concepts of Academic Reading and Writing and practicing critical and reflective reading and writing tasks   have been pivotal issues in the continuum of academic discourse. This mainly resides over maximizing the learners’ effectiveness in epistemic and critical literacy, process and product of writing, and oral presentation facets of academic communication. The learners’ engagement in   advanced critical reading tasks is meant to enhance their skills in organizing research literature review through applying analysis, evaluation and synthesis higher order skills.  In this regard, the fundamental concepts of how  scholarly works could be accessed from different research databases, analyzed considering  the diverse features of academic writings, examined for credibility, evaluated for relevance and bias and synthesized to  support claims in  scholarly works will be focused. The other dimension of academic communication gives emphasis to academic writing which takes model written insights at the expense of critical reading engagements. The features of academic writing inputs are succinctly presented so that learners can use them to write well edited and structured academic articles.  In addition, the academic communication languages interwoven all along the components of research works will be emphasized in the analysis, synthesis and evaluation of academic arguments. Properly acknowledging authoritative, theoretical and empirical sources, the learners will take part in critical reading and writing reflective tasks to make arguments. Presenting technically, insightfully and scholarly prepared academic works addressing the audience will be the other point of practice prioritized in the course.

Hence, learners will acquire insights and develop the ability to use the various discourse patterns of academic English typically required for writing and reporting research activities, course assignments, field reports, term papers, reviewing articles and book reviews. As the course focuses on preparing students for the academic writing and communication required in graduate level courses, learners will also discover how to incorporate the work of other authors into their own writing according to existing requirements of academic practice.
